Words can not express the deep level of gratitude and pride we feel at LLS when I reflect upon the Georgia Light the Night Walks. We had over 16,000 participants come out and show their support raising over $2.1 million!!! You should know that it is because of YOU and all your hard work we are able to fund research, provide patient aid and educate patients and their families.

At LLS, we know how hard our participants and volunteers work in order to raise funds and bring awareness to the community and we are so grateful! We are so appreciative for all that you do and feel so lucky to have such dedicated participants. It is our mission to find a cure for blood cancers and we will not stop looking.

You can't even imagine all the battles Preslie and her family has fought and overcome. When you look at her, you only see smiles and those beautiful blue eyes, not cancer! Preslie was diagnosed with ALL Pre-B Leukemia just months before her second birthday in 2009. Even after the chemotherapy, hair loss and multiple hospital stays, Preslie remained a happy child. Today, her cancer is in remission, but she still continues her treatment. This experience has forced her family to never take life for granted, but to live for today! Please join with me as we honor Preslie as the 2011 Carter's Honored Hero!

Heroes Among Us

After constant pain and physical exhaustion, Marion finally decided to take her daughter's advice and go to the doctor, but never did she expect to hear the word cancer. In May of 2009, Marion was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma. After blood transfusions, chemo therapy, and multiple drug treatments, she lost her life just months after her diagnosis at the young age of 52. She has left her legacy of 3 children to honor and remember her always. While she is no longer here with us, she will be loved and remembered always.

John & his wife Torri have been involved in Light The Night for years, but it was not until 2010 that they would have a personal connection within their family; John was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Now John and his family walk to inspire others and he feels absolutely honored to have been chosen as the 2011 Honored Hero.

He began a six month chemo therapy regimen a few weeks after the diagnosis and finished his treatment in August of 2010. Now, he's in remission. John says, "Throughout our years of involvement with LLS, we've seen hope in the eyes of so many families who have been helped by LLS-funded research., but it is definitely a different experience when it's personal.

Remembering some of Atlanta's best

Kim was diagnosed in January 2002 and lost her battle just five months later. She had a heart of gold and always put others before herself. Kim led a courageous and exemplary battle, and left an enduring legacy. Please join us on Saturday, November 5th as we walk to commemorate her life!

Marcus was an adoring son, loving brother, proud uncle, dear nephew and devoted friend. Even when diagnosed with Lymphoma in the summer of 1996, he never lost his spirit. Tragically Marcus lost his life in 1998. His family and friends relentlessly fight for a cure and walk every year in remembrance of him.

On February 16, 2010 Mike went to the doctor to get some answers for a recent bump on his head. When the words cancer came out of the doctors mouth, Mike was shocked. He was later diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. After four rounds of chemotherapy and six hospital stays totaling 53 days, Mike went into remission in August.

His love for life and positive outlook has served as an inspiration to so many and we are thrilled to announce him as our 2011 Atlanta Honored Hero!

This little cute is Samariona! She is 10 years old and is in 5th grade. Samariona was diagnosed back in 2006 and has undergone bone marrow transplants, chemo therapy, and other forms of treatments. Just the picture shows, she loves life and her smile is contagious. She loves to sing, dance and draw.

In September of 2002, Davey was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia at the young age of 8 and had a second run-in with cancer in 2009. Bobby does not allow his cancer to take over and still continues to enjoy the finer things in life...fishing that is!

On October 16, 2009 David was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Sadly, after a treatment of chemotherapy and bone marrow transplant, he passed away one year after his diagnosis leaving his wife and two daughters. He will be remembered always, but never forgotten. We walk for people like David and his family and honor him by naming David as the 2011 Savannah Remembered Hero.

Greyson is an 8th grade student at Pinewood Christian Academy. He was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) in November of 2010 and went through a treatment protocol of chemotherepy.

Greyson enjoys football, paintball, video games and spending time with his family. Funds raised for Light The Night benefit local patients like Greyson!

It all happened after a trip to the ER for some erratic heartbeats. The blood tests came back reporting some irregularly high white blood cells counts. After months of tests with his oncologist, Steve received the news, he was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL), a disease that usually affects people in their 60s or 70s. He handled his diagnosis incredibly well and never felt sorry for himself; he was determined to fight!

Steve has always been a guy who thinks the glass is half full. Being diagnosed with leukemia at the young age of 33 didn’t change that.

Steve and his wife, Karen, have been attending the Light The Night Walk since it began in Athens many years ago. He says, "So many people caring for other people and it is a lot of fun too." Steve admits that he is out there every year not for himself, but for the young kids and babies diagnosed with blood cancers. That, he says, is what it is all about. As for being the Light The Night’s Athens Honored Hero? "I think it’s pretty cool, and an honor" he says "but I don’t think I have done anything heroic, and I don’t consider myself a hero, but I do hope I can be an inspiration to others".

Baby Bobby was born in February of 2008, but only hours into his life, the doctors knew something wasn't right. He was taken to CHOA where his parents heard the terrifying diagnosis of Myelomonocytic Leukemia. At just three months old, he endured his first round of chemotherepy and at four months, he received a bone marrow transplant. Complications arose and Bobby's tiny little body just couldn't fight off everything. He passed away in his mother's arms.

The pain of losing a child has been unbearable for their family, but they have persevered in honor of Bobby. They share his story to spread awareness and to make sure baby Bobby is never forgotten. Light The Night is a night of hope for their family, where they are surrounded by people who understand their situation and unite together in hopes of finding a cure!

Our Inspiration

Sarah was our Remembered Hero for the 2010 LTN Walk. Sadly, she passed away in 2009 from leukemia. She was an amazing person, full of life and positivity. Some of her favorite interests included traveling, reading and she was a huge Georgia football fan!

This is Krista. Sadly, she passed away in 2006 from Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Her legacy lives on by her two children, Jason and Lindsey. Krista was our Remembered Hero at the 2010 LTN Walk.

Jordan is a 13 year old who loves, baseball, football, and boating. He was diagnosed with ALL T-cell Leukemia last year and has bravely been fighting since. His treatment is ongoing, but he is doing extremely well.

This is Cynthia. She was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma when she was 18 years old. Since going into remission, she has returned to school and works part time. Her positive attitude and drive can be seen a thousand miles away. She is a volunteer with LLS and helps bring awareness to young adults about blood cancers. Cynthia was our Honored Hero for our 2010 Atlanta LTN Walk.

Funds raised throught Light The Night go towards helping many patients like these. Not all stories end happily, some are filled with loss, but they all have one thing in common: hope for a cure! Thank you to these families and so many more for sharing their stories, putting a face and a name to these horrible diseases is never easy. All these patients have many similarities, but one stands out the most, the will and desire to live, and that is why they are our inspirations!

Story About Harris

At just five and a half months old, Harris Sheridan was diagnosed with leukemia and within a day, he was starting chemotherapy.

“I remember asking what his survival rate was and they said it was good—around 45 to 50 percent but would increase if he had a blood marrow transplant, “ says his mom, Carol. “I told them that that may sound good in the doctor world but it didn’t in the parent world.” And the world they were about to enter was one filled with seemingly endless weeks in the hospital, terrifying moments and finally, a few months later, some good news.

On the day he was going to be discharged from the hospital, the doctors found what they were hoping for---a blood marrow donor for Harris. After testing his family, including his two older brothers, Harris’ dad was an almost perfect match. At less than a year old, Harris received a blood marrow transplant.

That was in 2005.

Today, Harris is a healthy, vibrant and strong five year old who will enter kindergarten in the fall. “He is the most resilient and independent child, “says Carol.

“As devastating as this was on the front end, we feel incredibly fortunate and so blessed,” says Carol. “We chose to have our children later in life and we are so glad we did. If we had our kids 15 years ago, we probably wouldn’t have Harris today. The advances in treatments and protocols in the last several years by The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society have made a tremendous difference in the lives of so many children and families.”

When asked how she feels about being an inspiration to employees at Carter’s, her answer was a simple one. “It’s incredible to have a company that is so civically minded. It’s truly wonderful to see how much energy they have put into making a difference. They are an inspiration to me.”

You BET we are thankful at The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. While it has been a rough year for many, we are some of the most fortunate people working in the US. The best incentives we can earn are hearing your success stories, watching the research grow, and giving each blood cancer patient a second shot at life. The mission is our passion, and we are so thankful for our jobs! Here are some amazing outcomes you have allowed us to provide:

- $245,000 of financial support to blood cancer patients in Georgia to offset the financial burdens of blood cancer
- 5 of your dollars now covers the costs to send a packet to a newly diagnosed patient, which includes information on support and their specific disease
- We have now started a national volunteer and support group called IMPACT for 18-25 year olds right here in our Georgia office. This group allows survivors and patients to heal together while giving back to others battling cancer.
- Team In Training (TNT) is the world's first, best and largest charity sports training program and to this date has raised over $900 million since 1988. Yup, we’re going to hit $1 BILLION (in my best Austin Powers voice) this year. Follow their new blog: http://www.teamintrainingga.blogspot.com/
- With a $100 donation, you support 1 round trip per day for 5 days for a patient living in rural Georgia to drive to treatment in Atlanta.

- Money talks, and the dollar signs have been flashing since since 1949… The Society has raised more than $680 million in research. This specifically targets leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma
- Kids across the country have proven that they have a voice by raising more than $100 million over the past 14 years with our Youth and School programs… Quite the future we have coming at us! Really, I could go on braggin for hours. But it’s not really bragging… it’s my expression of how thankful I am for your support and selfless giving! I am inspired each day by constant compassion… and I could go on and on, but I’m sure my simple words will never describe how thankful we are to represent you! So, hats off to you all this thanksgiving, cause it’s you (and my job) I am thankful for. Now go carve some turkey!

A new kinda family tradition…

Here at LLS we know it’s not just during the Holidays that people need a helping hand, even though it tends to be the main time charities see donations pour in. Don’t get me wrong, it’s amazing the amount of selflessness we see November through January. Why not take this time though to teach your kids about giving and turn it into a year round habit, instead of an annual tradition?

The Light The Night Walk '09 is still collecting funds through January, and after that we will start planning for next year! Have your kids donate some of their holiday wealth to our Staff Team page if you don’t have one yourself. (http://pages.lightthenight.org/ga/Atlanta09/TeamIntern). Celebrate some of the free days of holiday break by bringing your children to visit kids in chemo or recovery rooms at the hospital. There are lots of programs at both Piedmont and Northside Hospital that are great options… it’s especially special for children to see their peers and understand what they are going through from another set of tiny eyes. (They will learn a lesson that will last a lifetime, and not even realize they are being educated!)

This is Adam Wingate. When this cutie was just two years old, he was diagnosed with Acute Leukemia. His mom wants supporters and those on the sidelines to know "this has been devastating for our family,” says Mechelle. “But he is a strong little boy whose strength amazes me everyday. Without the support of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Adam wouldn’t have a chance. All of us who are affected by blood cancers are fighting for the same thing—for our kids to lead a happy and healthy life.” With the help of your donations that support our mission, Adam is now in remission. Just like we do with honored and remembered heroes at our Light The Night Walks, hang this story on your fridge or in the living room and remind your family why we are working together to raise money and awareness.

Also, a big thanks to Michael O'Keefe who raised a whopping amount for Team In Training. Michael serves as an inspiration to his child at The Academy and as an amazing son to his mother who passed away from leukemia in 2007. Holy COW! Can you believe the Athens Walk is tomorrow and our ATLANTA walk is on SATURDAY!! No? Me either!! The Walks will look much more spectacular!)

Clean-Up/Recycling (8:00—10:30 pm): Help break down and clean up walk site after closing ceremonies; collect and properly dispose of balloons and batteries.

Accounting Room (4:00-9:00 pm): A behind the scenes job. Count money and prepare for deposit. Must volunteer for entire shift. These volunteers will be indoors and will not be able to take part in the walk festivities.

The rain certainly didn’t slow anyone at LLS down this week! We are in full force Walk mode with Albany’s Light The Night Walk TONIGHT! Vans are packed and en route for our very first walk this season in Georgia. This week we have more prizes and events to introduce and keep you on your toes for fundraising! Oh yes, Fun Friday has arrived yet again. We love it, you love, so let's get to it...

*Ask a local restaurant to donate a portion of their evening proceeds to your team.. you'd be surprised how willing and excited they are to participate... trust me, I just did it! :)

*Have a garage sale! Get rid of all that clutter now that the kids are back in school AND have their new supplies. Sell paper balloons along with all your clothes, toys, furniture and whatever else isn't nailed down in your house!

*Ask your office to brown bag it for a week or just one day and donate the money they would normally use for grub to your LTN team. You could even bring out blankets and make it an indoor picnic! (Send us pictures if you do that, please!!)

Everyone needs a friend or helping hand, no matter how independent or self sufficient you claim to be... I know you need help. Here at LLS, we are not afraid to admit, we need you! All of our markets are looking for a few extra hands to volunteer at their respective walk sites. It was a... Strike!

No worries, the employees here at The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society are not going on strike. I'm talking about our ATL Kick Off Party held this past weekend at Ten Pin Bowling Alley in Atlantic Station... It was a hit. Shout out to William at swanky Ten Pin for being so very accommodating, but most importantly to all of our marvelous Team Captains that made it out! By the looks of this year's team captains energy and commitment, LTN 2009 is going to be very successful. Of course, it will only be that way with all of your support and determination (yes, I did pull out the corny line, but only dropped it because it's TRUE) so keep on truckin!

As one of our managers said, we wouldn't complain if we were out of a job because you raised so much money to cure blood cancers. Some might say that that would be the bomb.

We are here to provide you with the tools and support to put us out of our jobs (really, I AM serious), so find the emails to the lifeguard that taught your kids swim lessons this summer, the new teacher in school, your pastor and your barber- because just a few more people is all you need to meet your goal and raise funds from your very own donations webpage. It's the easiest way to walk the talk.

Fireworks and Fundraising Sound Great!

Everyone is out, weather is hot, and food is great. Why not add some fun and easy fundraising to your 4th of July weekend? You'll have mad cash before the fireworks even start if you look below and recruit some friends for these simple fundraisers.

ICE ICE BABY- Forget lemonade, it's hot outside. Freeze Pops: tastey, easy, cheap and refreshing. You can't ask for much more, other than perhaps $1 set up at your pool. These classic summer yummies come in mass packing by the hundreds for under five dollars if you pick the pick the right grocer. Set it up and get ready to have the kids and adults swarming.

SPARK AND SHINE: Everyone is usually looking for their own fireworks display before the show. Sell small, safe sparklers to light your July night!

GIVE A LITTLE GET A LITTLE: If you're not hosting a BBQ, you're probably going to one! Help a friend mow their lawn in exchange for a donation to your team. Just an hour or so and everyone will be green with glee.

BAKE IT OFF: 4th means food, and if it doesn't it will now... Plan a bake off of any and all dishes and drinks at your backyard party. Ask for small donations from all entries and eaters, hand out cards to rank the top 3 recipes, spread the fare around and let the eating begin! Announce your winners and thank them for their grub and their dough.

STRIKE A POSE: With lots of digital cameras be pulled out this weekend, put your festivities to up to a challenge. Create a contest for all of the photos taken during your 4th celebrations, having friends and family email their best pics to you. Upload to sites like shutterfly or facebook and make your judgment. Each person participating can donate to your cause and everyone will be able to view pictures from the weekend in one place!

TOURNEY TIME: Bags, cornhole, beans and boards, bean bag toss... Whatever you call it, you know it's a great backyard game. Create a tournament with a tiny entry fee and play on! The ultimate victor can be announced and rewarded at the end of the games.
